Local Boy Scout Leaders Endorse Eagle Badge for Gay Moraga Youth

The decision, denied in October, will now be considered by national Boy Scout leaders.

Moraga Boy Scout Ryan Andresen has moved one step closer to getting his Eagle Scout badge, despite the fact that it was denied in October because Andresen is gay.

That denial sparked a national controversy, landing Andresen and his mother on talk shows and national news. He also received support from local and national politicians, including U.S. Sen. Barbara Boxer, Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom and 32 California state legislators. Nearly 500,000 people have signed a petition calling for the Boy Scouts of America to grant Andresen his Eagle Scout badge and overturn the policy prohibiting gays from belonging to the Boy Scouts.

On Dec. 31, local scout leaders agreed to submit Andresen’s request to an Eagle Board of Review. They have recommended approval of the badge to the Mt. Diablo-Silverado Council, which is headquartered in Pleasant Hill; it next moves to consideration by the national Scout leaders.

“I’m just so incredibly happy for Ryan,” said his mother Karen Andresen. “He’s worked so hard for this honor, and as a mother, it means the world to me to know that our local Scouting community believes in him, too. Regardless of what the BSA’s National Advancement Team decides to do with his application, this victory makes it all worth it and gives me so much hope for the future of the organization.”

That's better. He should also receive an apology.

Wonderful news! And I agree with John.

They denied him his badge and article was updated but I don't know why that story didn't make Albany Patch:

Story has been updated. Albany Patch, like other individual Patch sites, has a very small staff, and hence unable to be on duty 24 hours a day. That inevitably means there will sometimes be a lag time, especially during nighttime and weekend hours.

I think they should change the policy nationally about sexual orientation. Who cares whether he's gay or not?

As a mother of a local scout, I know our troop supported Ryan and backed the petition - and as the BSA is so heavily financially supported by conservative Christian churches at the national level, I don't think we can expect any change of policy in the immediate future - However, we should all keep this controversy in the public eye and continue to sign petitions and write letters to BSA national leaders - GO RYAN!!

This should not have even become an issue. Yes, absolutely he should receive an apology. I hope this abomonation never happens again. When are people going to realise that being gay is not a choice???? These people do not wish to be ostracized, made fun of, discriminated against, beaten up, bullied or any of the other dispicable things that happen to them on a daily basis. Isn't the scouts all about the character and upstanding citizens these young men become? They should be ashamed of themselves for denying him his badge simply because of who he is. My father was a Boyscout leader, and my brother was an Eagle Scout. Neither of them would have tolerated this young man being denied his badge because he is gay. I hope this is something I never have to read about again. Ryan....stick up for who you are! You're better than any biggots who try to tell you it's wrong to be who you are! You're a fine, upstanding young man...that's why you've gotten where you are! Now......get your just reward!!! Way to go, kiddo!

Amen to that Miss Beth!

Good point, Miss Mary....however, those people who call themselves "Christians" are what make REAL Christians look bad.....just like the ones you speak of. I think a lot of people are beginning to realise that those people are NOT Christians!!!
