Brazilian Vocalist Performs Sunday at Jazz at the Chimes

Rio de Janeiro native Claudia Villela will appear at the Julia Morgan-designed Chapel of the Chimes in a concert with guitarist Bob Basa on Sunday, May 19, at 2 p.m.

According to a press release from Jazz at the Chimes, "Claudia Villela’s haunting improvisations, and her surprising five-octave range, have earned her a consistent following at such venues as the Monterey Jazz Festival, Spoleto Festival, San Francisco Jazz Festival, U.C. Davis, Yoshi’s, and others clubs, concerts and festival dates across the United States, Japan, and Brazil.

"Creative and soulfully expressive, Villela’s music is heavily rooted in the traditional and contemporary sounds of Brazil’s rich creative cultural heritage."

Villela now lives in California.

A reception where the public can meet the artists, purchase CDs and enjoy refreshments will follow the concert.

Chapel of the Chimes is located at 4499 Piedmont Ave., Oakland. Free parking is available.

Jazz at the Chimes is a concert series produced by Mary D’Orazi and sponsored by Chapel of the Chimes in Oakland featuring Bay Area talent. 

TICKETS: $15 general; $10 seniors (60+) and students, for concert and reception. Purchase tickets at the door. Cash only. Ticket sales begin at 12:30 p.m.; doors open 1:30 p.m. Limited seating.
