Public Health Officials Forbid Dog-Friendly Show at The New Parkway

The Alameda County Department of Public Health gave two thumbs down to the theater's plan, which would have allowed customers to bring their dogs to a Saturday afternoon show.

A planned "doggie-style" matinee at Oakland's New Parkway theater was scuttled yesterday by county public health officials, according to a post on the theater's Facebook page.

The theater had planned to allow movie goers to bring their dogs to a screening of Beginners on Saturday afternoon, June 8 — an experiment thought to be the first of its kind in the U.S.

"The Alameda County Department of Public Health paid us a visit today and put the kibosh on the Parkway pooch project," theater staff posted Thursday night.

"We're still going to show Beginners--a delightful movie--at 3PM but we'll do so with people sans pooches, and any profit will go to a local animal shelter."

The theater, at 424 - 24th St., had planned to keep dogs away from its food operations and to clean the area thoroughly before its next show.
