BART's First Employee Dies at 89

Bill "B.R." Stokes began as BART's director of information in 1958, and was later promoted to general manager.

Bill "B. R." Stokes, the first employee ever hired by BART, has died at the age of 89.

Stokes was hired by the newly formed BART district in 1958 as director of information, making him officially the agency's first employee.

In 1963, Stokes was promoted to district general manager.

He died May 15 at his daughter's home in Sammamish, Washington.
