Four Freight Cars Derail in Union Pacific Rail Yard in Oakland

Four freight cars derailed in the Union Pacific rail yard in Oakland on Monday evening, a Union Pacific spokesman said this morning.

The cars derailed at 7:09 p.m. in the rail yard by the Fifth Avenue off-ramp to Interstate Highway 880, spokesman Mark Davis said. One of the cars contained frozen meat and the other three contained wood products, Davis said. No one was injured in the derailment.

Since it happened in the rail yard, the incident has not caused any disruptions to train traffic in the area, Davis said. The cause of the derailment is under investigation, he said.

Crews were working to get the cars upright this morning and Davis said he anticipated that they would be finished by noon today.
