College Prep Student Is 2013 National Policy Debate Champion

The debate team from the local independent high school received a "School of Excellence" award.

On June 21, 2013, Elsa Givan, a recent graduate of College Prep’s class of 2013,was awarded the First Place Speaker award in Policy Debate at the world’s largest academic competition.

Of the over 3,000 students who qualified for the national tournament hosted by the National Forensic League (NFL) on June 16–21 in Birmingham, Alabama, 426 (213 teams) were entered in Policy Debate.

Elsa Givan received the highest cumulative points during the tournamentfor the quality of her speaking and arguments.

College Prep’s Director of Debate Lexy Green shared, "College Prep is fortunate to have a long history of excellence in debate, but Elsa's first place finish at the national championship really stands out.

"It's like receiving the Academy Award for debate.”

During the school year, thousands of teams competed at district qualifying tournaments in order to qualify for the national championship.

Only three out of approximately thirty policy teams from the San Francisco Bay NFL District qualified to attend, with College Prep sending two teams

“Debate at College Prep isn't just a team, it's a family,” said champion Elsa Givan.

“I have had my happiest moments at debate tournaments, and not because of the wins or losses, but rather because of the people I was with.”

College Prep is equally proud to have won a “School of Excellence” award for overall performance in debate. This honor is given to the top twenty schools with entries in Policy, Lincoln Douglas, and Public Forum debate events.
