Cause Of Death Released On Mount Diablo Runner

Coroner says ultra marathoner died from heat stroke and dehydration in June race

The Contra Costa Coroner's office says a 63-year-old ultra marathoner died of heat stroke and dehydration during a race on Mount Diablo in June.

The coroner's report says the conditions that killed Rene Brunet of San Francisco were caused by running an extreme marathon in hot weather.

Brunet was one of the participants in a 50-kilometer race on the mountain in early June. The competitors ran to the top of Mount Diablo and back to Mitchell Canyon twice during the race.

Brunet was three miles from the finish when he collapsed and died.
