Restaurant Watch: Why The Guest Chef Closed

The story behind the College Avenue restaurant closing its doors is a surprising one. Plus an update on A16 Rockridge.

Why did The Guest Chef, the College Avenue restaurant with a rotating lineup of visiting chefs and varied cuisine, close recently?

It wasn't a lack of customers, but a lack of chefs, that led to the closure, owner Scott Cameron told the East Bay Express.

Cameron said applications for a two-week "guest chef" stint slowed down dramatically, and those proposals he did receive were not ones likely to draw many customers. At one point he simply had to close the restaurant's doors for two weeks because there was no chef available.

Cameron will reopen The Guest Chef, at 5337 College Ave., Oakland, for two encore presentations  in June and July. Get details and make reservations on the restaurant's website here.

A16 ROCKRIDGE TWEETS

A16 Rockridge, which hopes to open its doors at 5256 College Ave. to customers later this week, is now on Twitter. Keep track of the last-minute preparations @A16Rockridge here. You can also follow the restaurant's progress on their Facebook page here.

The restaurant, while a spinoff from San Francisco's A16, has its own distinct menu, with regional specialties from Naples and Puglia, including pizza and calzone.
